Will plants or animals be collected? Yes
Will vertebrate animals be collected or manipulated? No
Will markings or flags be used? No
Description of activity or project: We plan to collect Typha latifolia from the field station in order to test the photosynthetic activity of this plant. We plan to collect two full plants. The leaves from these plants will then be used to determine whether Typha latifolia employs the C3 or C4 mechanism for photosynthesis.

Description of activity or project: I am currently volunteering at a local elementary school, where I co-teach a science class once a week. As part of a class on microscopes, my partner and I wanted to use a small sample of water from pHake lake (similar to how we observed the small organisms in our Bio 44 class last semester). I discussed this idea with Dr. Schenk and she didn't think it would cause a problem.
Thanks!

Description of activity or project: I'm doing an independent study project learning the native flora and fauna and practicing nature observation techniques. I will be visiting a particular area (I haven't yet chosen the area) in the BFS several times a week to draw and identify plant and animal species. The purpose of the project is to increase my understanding and appreciation of the local sage scrub ecology.
