Will markings or flags be used? No
Description of course experiment, project or activity: The students will out several small experiments on Argentine ant foraging behavior. One student will test whether Argentine ants recruit more quickly to baits if those baits carry scents that the ants have previously experienced in association with food. The experiment will involve placement of tuna baits near colonies for several days, followed by baiting with stations that either do or do not have tuna scent. The three other students will be looking at how ant foragers respond to disruption of scent trails. Scent trails will be disturbed either with a) placement of barriers such as sticks or rocks, b) sweeping c) spraying with a scent (perfume) or d) water. The movement behavior of foragers and the time to reestablishment of the trail will be measured.
